Mandate

The Centre for Marine Pollution Monitoring and Seafood Safety (CEMPOS) was established at the University of Port Harcourt in April 2009 as a Research Centre for the implementation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Technical Cooperation projects on the environment with emphasis on marine pollution monitoring.

The Centre’s primary aim is to serve as a coordinating institution for the adoption of a nationally coordinated approach to Nigeria’s marine pollution and seafood safety monitoring programmes.

The Centre has the following mandate

To develop management strategies for marine living resources through Ecosystem monitoring and modelling efforts.

Evolving, coordinating and implementing time targeted national /regional R&D programmes in the field of marine living resources

The scope of the Centre’s activities covers three broad areas as follows:

·   Baseline studies and pollution “HOT SPOTS” identification/mapping;

·   Pollution trends assessment; and

·   Monitoring of seafood safety.
